Even if some of the radioactive materials 'leaked' or still 'leak' from the ship, this radioactivity will be diluted very quickly in the water reducing the concentration substantially, in addition, the radiation emitted by the radioactive materials on the ship will not travel very far as the water is an excellent shield.
A great example of that would be the Fukushima disaster-- where there was radiation. It was extremely dangerous for humans to go in. And what would have been really great is if we could have sent robots in to do something as simple as turn a valve.
The immediate effects can be lethal, you can develop acute radiation syndrome which you can die from in a few minutes or hours. There are also lots of delayed syndromes where you may not die until a few weeks and even long-term effects like cancer risks.
What NASA and other space agencies are concerned about is whether or not the immune system is going to be compromised during very prolonged spaceflight missions, what clinical risks are there to the astronauts during these missions when theyre exposed to things like microgravity, radiation and isolation stress? Could it be catastrophic to the level that the astronaut wouldnt be able to complete the mission?
This study now shows that radiation delivered at space relevant dose rates over extended times elicits adverse neurocognitive effects similar to our past studied using dose rates that were about 400 times higher.
