How to use jet stream in a sentence?
Changes in sea ice influence ocean currents and the jet stream in ways that can affect weather in lower latitudes, including the United States and Europe.
In other words, while the globe may be warmer than average as a whole, some areas will still observe colder temperatures and even severe cold outbreaks, this regional variation is due to the influences of the oceans, mountains, deserts, ice sheets, and other geographic features that all affect our weather and climate. It's also from changes in weather patterns that are related to the position of the jet stream( storm track), which can vary from day-to-day or even month-to-month.
When the polar vortex is weak, or an SSW event occurs, then the jet stream will tend to weakened, move further south, and become' wavier,' the effect of these changes is for warmer than normal air to move into the Arctic Amplification, colder weather to enter North America and Europe/Asia, and more extreme weather and storms overall in the middle latitudes( e.g., snowstorms).
That jet stream has become wavy, and it's got stuck in what we call an Omega block, because it's got the shape of the Greek letter Omega, and when it gets in that, it doesn't move anywhere, it blocks it, so the high pressure that's been building just gets stuck for days or weeks on end, and these Omegas appear in different parts of the northern hemisphere.
Even if the jet stream does what it historically used to do, with no specific climate change contributions, climate change is still dramatically increasing the likelihood of these extreme heat events, if you warm the atmosphere, you'd expect those heat waves to be hotter than they otherwise would have been.
