  1. affidavit

In the highest sense, as in a court of justice, "an oath is a reverent appeal to God in corroboration of what one says," Abbott Law Dict.; an affidavit is a sworn statement made in writing in the presence of a competent officer; an adjuration is a solemn appeal to a person in the name of God to speak the truth. An oath is made to man in the name of God; a vow, to God without the intervention, often without the knowledge, of man. In the lower sense, an oath may be mere blasphemy or profane swearing. Anathema, curse, execration, and imprecation are modes of invoking vengeance or retribution from a superhuman power upon the person against whom they are uttered. Anathema is a solemn ecclesiastical condemnation of a person or of a proposition. Curse may be just and authoritative; as, the curse of God; or, it may be wanton and powerless: "so the curse causeless shall not come," Prov. xxvi, 2. Execration expresses most of personal bitterness and hatred; imprecation refers especially to the coming of the desired evil upon the person against whom it is uttered. Malediction is a general wish of evil, a less usual but very expressive word. Compare TESTIMONY.

How to use affidavit in a sentence?

  1. Nancy Gertner:

The Department of Justice is on the horns of a dilemma. I would imagine this is an affidavit even more exhaustive than most because they knew what the target was and they knew that there would be pushback, and so now having laid it all out and more in an affidavit, to have the risk that everything that they are doing become public must be very troubling to them.

  2. Eytan Nielsen:

Cody Longo is innocent. Overwhelming evidence unequivocally disproves and refutes the allegations in the affidavit, we strongly believe the case should be dismissed, and shout not go to trial. However, if it does go to trial, Cody Longo will be found not guilty.

  3. Edward J. Burns:

The fundamental premise of the affidavit is that because a piece of information discovered in an entirely independent police investigation is not in the dioceses files, the diocese must have hidden or concealed that information and is continuing to hide or conceal that information, so that it warrants a raid of religious offices.

  4. Rudy Giuliani:

I have an affidavit here thats been online for six months that nobody bothered to read from the gentleman who was fired, Viktor Shokin, the so-called corrupt prosecutor, the Biden people say that he wasnt investigating Hunter Biden at the time. He says under oath that he was.

  5. Kendall Coffey:

The prosecutors went through this relying on the probable cause affidavit [which they filed with the court in charging Zimmerman.] They were prepared to accept the judge's ruling, rather than make an all out effort to defeat bond by putting their best evidence forward. Because if they had done that, the defense would have had a preview of their case and still wouldn't have had bond denied." -On the Trayvon Martin Trial
