  1. hesitancynoun

Doubt is a lack of conviction that may refer either to matters of belief or to matters of practise. As regards belief, while doubt is lack of conviction, disbelief is conviction, to the contrary; unbelief refers to a settled state of mind, generally accompanied with opposition of heart. Perplexity is active and painful; doubt may be quiescent. Perplexity presses toward a solution; doubt may be content to linger unresolved. Any improbable statement awakens incredulity. In theological usage unbelief and skepticism have a condemnatory force, as implying wilful rejection of manifest truth. As regards practical matters, uncertainty applies to the unknown or undecided; doubt implies some negative evidence. Suspense regards the future, and is eager and anxious; uncertainty may relate to any period, and be quite indifferent. Misgiving is ordinarily in regard to the outcome of something already done or decided; hesitation, indecision, and irresolution have reference to something that remains to be decided or done, and are due oftener to infirmity of will than to lack of knowledge. Distrust and suspicion apply especially to the motives, character, etc., of others, and are more decidedly adverse than doubt. Scruple relates to matters of conscience and duty.

How to use hesitancy in a sentence?

  1. William Moss:

The way I often think about vaccine hesitancy is that people often overestimate the risk of the vaccine and underestimate the risk of the disease.

  2. Jerome Adams:

I'm worried about the fact that the FDA quite frankly hasn't yet given us an update on full approval of these vaccines, which we know is causing hesitancy in many people and which also is causing companies and businesses and schools to delay their decisions about vaccine mandates.

  3. Moncef Slaoui:

It is however critical that most of the American people decide and accept to take the vaccine, we are very concerned by the hesitancy that we see.

  4. Christina Pushaw:

By dismissively ignoring Governor DeSantis’ efforts to protect vulnerable Floridians, Psaki is the one playing politics with the pandemic, the White House should be more concerned about the flip-flopping of the CDC, which is inadvertently promoting vaccine hesitancy with their confusing, contradictory public communications. Stating that vaccinated people should wear masks and socially distance is implying that the vaccines do not change anything, which is the wrong message for our federal government to be promoting.

  5. Josh Blackman:

On the whole there is a lot in Judge Kavanaugh's record to admire. This opinion, however may be an outlier because Judge Kavanaugh showed too much of a hesitancy to critically interpret the law Congress actually wrote.
