How to use rosetta in a sentence?
People use the term' Rosetta Stone' a lot. But this is the first time we've been able to verify the mass with these three different methods for one supernova, and all of them are consistent, now we can push forward using these different methods and combining them, because there are a lot of other supernovas where we have masses from one method but not another.
This time, as we're riding along next to the comet, the most logical way to end the mission is to set Rosetta down on the surface, but there is still a lot to do to confirm that this end-of-mission scenario is possible. We'll first have to see what the status of the spacecraft is after perihelion and how well it is performing close to the comet, and later we will have to try and determine where on the surface we can have a touchdown.
We would be very surprised to hear from Philae again after so long, but we will keep Rosetta’s listening channel on until it is no longer possible due to power constraints as we move ever further from the Sun towards the end of the mission, philae has been a tremendous challenge and for the lander teams to have achieved the science results that they have in the unexpected and difficult circumstances is something we can all be proud of.
A series of astronomical observations obtained over the period 1986 to 2018 supports the idea that life is a cosmic rather than a purely terrestrial or planetary phenomenon, these include the detection of biologically relevant molecules in interstellar clouds and comets, mid-infrared spectra of interstellar grains and the dust from comets, a diverse set of data from comets including the Rosetta mission showing consistency with biology and the frequency of Earth-like or habitable planets in the Galaxy.
The term Rosetta Stone is used too often as an analogy when we find a new astrophysical object, but in this case I think it is fitting, this supernova is literally helping us decode thousand-year-old records from cultures all over the world.
