  1. fondness

Affection is kindly feeling, deep, tender, and constant, going out to some person or object, being less fervent and ardent than love, whether applied to persons or things. Love is an intense and absorbing emotion, drawing one toward a person or object and causing one to appreciate, delight in, and crave the presence or possession of the person or object loved, and to desire to please and benefit the person, or to advance the cause, truth, or other object of affection; it is the yearning or outgoing of soul toward something that is regarded as excellent, beautiful, or desirable; love may be briefly defined as strong and absorbing affection for and attraction toward a person or object. Love may denote the sublimest and holiest spiritual affection as when we are taught that "God is love." Charity has so far swung aside from this original meaning that probably it never can be recalled (compare BENEVOLENCE). The Revised Version uses love in place of charity in 1 Cor. xiii, and elsewhere. Love is more intense, absorbing, and tender than friendship, more intense, impulsive, and perhaps passionate than affection; we speak of fervent love, but of deep or tender affection, or of close, firm, strong friendship. Love is used specifically for personal affection between the sexes in the highest sense, the love that normally leads to marriage, and subsists throughout all happy wedded life. Love can never properly denote mere animal passion, which is expressed by such words as appetite, desire, lust. One may properly be said to have love for animals, for inanimate objects, or for abstract qualities that enlist the affections, as we speak of love for a horse or a dog, for mountains, woods, ocean, or of love of nature, and love of virtue. Love of articles of food is better expressed by liking, as love, in its full sense, expresses something spiritual and reciprocal, such as can have no place in connection with objects that minister merely to the senses. Compare ATTACHMENT; FRIENDSHIP.

How to use fondness in a sentence?

  1. Jeanne-Marie Roland:

A fondness for satire indicates a mind pleased with irritating others for myself, I never could find amusement in killing flies.

  2. Consumer Union Schwantes:

The organization noted that nearly 50,000 consumers joined an online petition last month favoring the FCC's privacy rules. And in a nationally representative CR Consumer Voices Survey, 65 percent of Americans said they were either slightly or not at all confident that their personal data is private and not distributed without their knowledge. Florida Sen. Bill Nelson before the vote on Wednesday said the rules put American consumers — each one of us who pay these monthly fees for their broadband service — in the driver's seat of how our personal data is used and shared. Is that too much to ask ? I don't think so. The resolution will still have to pass the House of Representatives, which it is likely to do, and then be signed by President Trump. ISPs have been under the FCC's jurisdiction only since 2015, when they werereclassified as public utilitiesunder something called Title II of the Communications Act. Meantime, web-based companies such as Amazon and Google are regulated by the Federal Trade Commission( FTC), and face less stringent requirements. Republican legislators and lobbyists from cable, telecom, and advertising industries say that difference in regulation is unfair. Sen. John Thune( R-SD) said Wednesday that the FCC had unfairly distorted the marketplace when it imposed unnecessarily onerous privacy restrictions on broadband providers while leaving the rest of the internet under the strong and successful regime at the FTC. The federal government could move authority over ISPs back to the FCC. However, that would be a complex process, and one not favored by advocacy groups, including Consumers Union. Any fondness for the FTC’s approach to privacy is merely support for dramatically weaker privacy protections favored by most corporations, the organization wrote in a letter to senators earlier this week. There is no question that consumers favor the FCC’s current broadband privacy rules. The measure passed by a 50-48 vote along party lines The Senate Thursday. To roll back the rules, Republican senators employed a legislative maneuver that prevents the FCC from adopting ‘ similar ’ rules, even far weaker ones, to protect internet users in the future.

  3. Ivana Trump:

I have recently read some comments attributed to me from nearly 30 years ago at a time of very high tension during my divorce from Donald. The story is totally without merit. Donald and I are the best of friends and together have raised three children that we love and are very proud of. I have nothing but fondness for Donald and wish him the best of luck on his campaign. Incidentally, I think he would make an incredible president.

  4. Vladimir Mayakovsky:

No gray hairs streak my soul, no grandfatherly fondness there I shake the world with the might of my voice, and walk-handsome, twentytwoyearold.

  5. Lady Mary Wortley Montagu:

I wish you would moderate that fondness you have for your children. I do not mean you should abate any part of your care, or not do your duty to them in its utmost extent, but I would have you early prepare yourself for disappointments, which are heavy in proportion to their being surprising.
