English Synonyms and Antonyms
consequence
Effect is the strongest of these words; it is that which is directly produced by the action of an efficient cause; we say, "Every effect must have an adequate cause" (compare CAUSE). In regard to human actions, effect commonly relates to intention; as, the shot took effect, i. e., the effect intended. A consequence is that which follows an act naturally, but less directly than the effect. The motion of the piston is the effect, and the agitation of the water under the paddle-wheels a consequence of the expansion of steam in the cylinder. The result is, literally, the rebound of an act, depending on many elements; the issue is that which flows forth directly; we say the issue of a battle, the result of a campaign. A consequent commonly is that which follows simply in order of time, or by logical inference. The end is the actual outcome without determination of its relation to what has gone before; it is ordinarily viewed as either the necessary, natural, or logical outcome, any effect, consequence, or result being termed an end; as, the end of such a course must be ruin. The event (Latin e, out, and venio, come) is primarily exactly the same in meaning as outcome; but in use it is more nearly equivalent to upshot signifying the sum and substance of all effects, consequences, and results of a course of action. Compare ACCIDENT; CAUSE; CIRCUMSTANCE; END; EVENT.

How to use consequence in a sentence?
One of the things that we noticed which was quite interesting was that these lakes are actually, in some cases, warming faster than the air temperatures because the air temperatures, you know, change in an instant, whereas the water temperatures, they reflect what is going on in the entire environment around them. So, it could be a reflection of there being less cloud cover, it could be a consequence of more glacial melt water coming into the lake. All these different processes taking place and they integrate them and they warm more gradually but the consequences of that warming can be very serious.
To have the Republicans with a straight face, after they have filibustered hundreds and hundreds of times issues that are of immense consequence to our country now come back and say, 'Well we shouldn't do it here,' so this is just, in effect, being kind of a poor loser. Because the fact is that how Leader McConnell can come out there without grimacing when he would say something like that is beyond my ability to comprehend.
Success is neither magical or mysterious. Success is the natural consequence of consistently applying the basic fundamentals.
I think it’s really unfortunate that this rule has now been passed, but I think it’s a necessary evil, i think kids have to learn that there are consequences for your actions, and this is the consequence.
Every week we hear from people who have been taken advantage of by fraudsters, it’s hard to hear these stories of citizens who are duped and not only have their hearts broken, but often their bank account drained and lose their good name to false accusations of abuse, but is a predictable consequence of giving out green cards to anyone who claims to have been the victim of a crime.
