  1. discourse

Conversation (Latin con, with) is, etymologically, an interchange of ideas with some other person or persons. Talk may be wholly one-sided. Many brilliant talkers have been incapable of conversation. There may be intercourse without conversation, as by looks, signs, etc.; communion is of hearts, with or without words; communication is often by writing, and may be uninvited and unreciprocated. Talk may denote the mere utterance of words with little thought; thus, we say idle talk, empty talk, rather than idle or empty conversation. Discourse is now applied chiefly to public addresses. A conference is more formal than a conversation. Dialog denotes ordinarily an artificial or imaginary conversation, generally of two persons, but sometimes of more. A colloquy is indefinite as to number, and generally somewhat informal. Compare BEHAVIOR.

    Synonyms:
chat, colloquy, communication, communion, confabulation, conference, conversation, converse, dialogue, intercourse, parley, talk

    Preposition:
Conversation with friends; between or among the guests; about a matter.

How to use discourse in a sentence?

  1. Daniel Bible:

A man was detained shortly after the shooting but was released after authorities determined he was not connected to the incident. ICE did not respond to a Fox News request for comment Tuesday. Daniel Bible, the field office director for the agencys enforcement and removal operations in San Antonio, blamed the shootingon elected officials, the media and activists for a breakdown inpolitical discourse that has encouraged violent acts. Political rhetoric and misinformation that various politicians, media outlets and activist groups recklessly disseminate to the American people regarding the ICE mission only serve to further encourage these violent acts, iCE officers put their lives on the line each and every day to keep our communities safe. This disturbing public discourse shrouds our critical law enforcement function and unnecessarily puts our officers safety at risk.

  2. Brendan Carr:

Moving forward at The FCC will bring much-needed clarity to Section 230 and close the loopholes that Big Tech has exploited, these reforms will promote' a forum for a true diversity of political discourse,' as Congress envisioned when it passed Section 230, without limiting the First Amendment rights of any speaker.

  3. Methodist University:

I thank the students from across campus who came together in the spirit of mutual respect and civil discourse to achieve this outcome.

  4. Christopher Wylie:

The company learned that there were segments of the population that responded to messages like 'drain the swamp' or images of border walls or indeed paranoia about the 'deep state' that weren't necessarily reflected in mainstream polling or mainstream political discourse that Steve Bannon was interested in to help build his movement.

  5. Virginia:

The first duty of a lecturer to hand you after an hour's discourse a nugget of pure truth to wrap up between the pages of your notebooks, and keep on the mantlepiece forever.
